Directional control valves are the switches of a pneumatic system, and two of the most common you will specify are the 3/2 and the 5/2. They look similar and are often driven by identical solenoids, but they do different jobs — and choosing the wrong one is a frequent cause of a cylinder that won’t retract or an actuator that behaves unpredictably. This guide explains what the numbers mean, what each valve does, and how to pick the right one.
What the Numbers Mean
The two figures describe the valve’s ports and positions. The first number is the number of ports (connections); the second is the number of switching positions. So a 3/2 valve has three ports and two positions, and a 5/2 valve has five ports and two positions. Ports typically include a pressure supply, one or two outputs to the actuator, and one or two exhausts. Both of these are two-position valves, so they simply switch between state A and state B — you’ll find both across our pneumatic cylinders & valves range.
What a 3/2 Valve Does
A 3/2 valve has one supply, one output and one exhaust. In one position it connects supply to the output; in the other it blocks supply and vents the output to exhaust. That makes it ideal for controlling a single air line on or off — driving a single-acting (spring-return) cylinder, operating a blow-off nozzle, piloting a larger valve, or switching a vacuum. 3/2 valves come as normally closed (no air passes until energised) or normally open (air passes until energised), and normally closed is the usual default for safety. Many of the solenoid valves in our process & control valves section are 3/2.
What a 5/2 Valve Does
A 5/2 valve has one supply, two outputs and two exhausts. It sends air to one side of an actuator while exhausting the other, then swaps when switched. This is exactly what a double-acting cylinder needs: pressurise one side to extend, then reverse to retract under power. Because it drives movement in both directions, the 5/2 is the standard valve for double-acting cylinders, rotary actuators and grippers. A single-solenoid 5/2 spring-returns to its rest position; a double-solenoid (bistable) 5/2 stays where it was last switched, which is useful when you want the actuator to hold position on power loss.
Common Applications
As a rule of thumb: use a 3/2 for anything that is simply on or off, and a 5/2 for anything that moves out and back. Typical 3/2 jobs are single-acting clamps, ejectors, air blast, vacuum control and pilot signals. Typical 5/2 jobs are double-acting cylinders on assembly and packaging machines, pick-and-place units, and any actuator that must be driven positively in both directions. If you need a cylinder to stop or hold mid-stroke, that is a job for a 5/3 valve (three positions) rather than a 5/2.
Choosing Between Them
Work from the actuator: single-acting (spring return) needs a 3/2; double-acting needs a 5/2. Then confirm the port thread and flow rate for your cylinder size, the pilot type (solenoid, air pilot or mechanical), the coil voltage, and whether you need monostable (spring return) or bistable (memory) switching.
