Why Is My Air Compressor Losing Pressure? A Troubleshooting Guide

The Problem: Pressure Drops Faster Than It Should

If your air compressor stops building pressure or loses it rapidly after the motor shuts off, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common complaints we hear at Captivair, and the good news is: it’s usually fixable.

A healthy compressor should hold its pressure for at least 30 minutes with the motor off. If yours drops noticeably within minutes, something’s wrong.

Check These Common Culprits

1. Leaks in Hose and Fittings

This is responsible for about 80% of pressure loss issues. Even tiny leaks add up.

How to find them:
– Mix a little washing-up liquid with water in a spray bottle
– With the tank pressurised, spray the entire system: hose connections, regulator, fittings, tank joints
– Bubbles = leak

Where they typically occur:
– Hose ends that have worn out
– Loose compression fittings (especially old BSP fittings that haven’t been serviced)
– Damaged hose from kinks or abrasion

Fix: Tighten fittings first. If that doesn’t work, replace the hose or fitting. Quality fittings from brands like Parker, PCL, and John Guest last much longer than cheap alternatives — the investment pays for itself in pressure and reliability. 2. Faulty Check Valve or Non-Return Valve

The check valve (one-way valve) prevents pressurised air from flowing back into the pump. If it fails, your compressor can’t build or hold pressure.

Signs of failure:
– Pressure builds but then drops even with the motor running
– Motor cycles on and off constantly trying to maintain pressure
– Hissing sound from the tank

Fix: Check valves wear out with age. They’re inexpensive to replace, and it’s a straightforward job. If you’re unsure, get a qualified technician to do it.

3. Worn Piston Rings or Cylinder Seals

If your compressor is older, internal seals degrade over time. Air leaks past the piston instead of being compressed into the tank.

Signs:
– Pressure creeps up very slowly
– Motor runs hot
– You notice oil in the outlet air (oil carries past the seals)

Fix: This usually means a rebuild or replacement, but it’s worth getting a diagnosis first.

4. Regulator Issues

The regulator controls the pressure delivered to your tools. A faulty regulator can cause pressure fluctuations or complete loss.

Check the regulator:
– Is the dial accurate? (Use a separate pressure gauge to verify)
– Is air leaking from the top cap?
– Are adjustment screws loose?

Fix: Try tightening the regulator nut. If that doesn’t work, it may need servicing or replacement.

5. Condensation and Moisture in the Tank

Water buildup in the tank creates rust, which can damage seals and valves. It also makes pressure readings unreliable.

How to drain it:
– Turn off and unplug the compressor
– Open the petcock (drain tap) at the bottom of the tank
– Let water drain into a bucket
– Close and restart

Prevent it: Drain your tank weekly in humid climates, monthly in dry ones. Better yet, install an aftercooler or water trap to remove moisture before it reaches the tank.

System-Wide Diagnosis

If you can’t locate the leak by spraying soapy water, try this:

1. Pressurise the tank to normal working pressure
2. Turn off the motor
3. Note the pressure reading
4. Wait 5 minutes and note it again
5. Calculate the pressure drop per minute

– Drop of 2-3 psi per minute = significant leak somewhere
– Drop of less than 1 psi per minute = normal

This tells you whether the problem is major or minor, and helps a technician diagnose faster.

When to Call in Help

If you’ve checked hoses and fittings and the pressure still drops, or if you’re uncomfortable opening up the compressor, it’s time to get professional help. Faulty internals can be dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Prevention: The Best Medicine

– Use quality hoses and fittings rated for your pressure
– Drain condensation weekly
– Check connections every month
– Replace worn hose ends before they start leaking
– Service your regulator annually
